Today we went to the Refinary Art Gallery in the city and we were welcomed by Roger who showed us around. We had a look around the Art shop first and then at the Nelson Intermediate Art Exhibition. After morning tea we met an artist who talked to us about was he did and how he became an artist. He is a sculpture and his work was pretty amazing. He welds metal together and creates all sorts! We also spent sometime in the sculpture garden sketching interesting things.

Matariki – Maori New Year

Matariki is the Māori name for the constellation of stars that are often known in other cultures as the Pleiades or the Seven Sisters. Matariki may be translated as mata riki – tiny eyes, or as mata Ariki – eyes of God. These eyes are thought to watch over the land and it’s people.

The yearly reappearance of Matariki signifies a time to prepare, to share ideas, to remember the past and celebrate the future. Matariki can be a time of change, and growth. During Matariki we acknowledge what we have and what we have to give.

Matariki celebrates the diversity of life. It's a celebration of culture, language, spirit and people, of our past, present and looking to the future.

Matariki Challenge - Have a go at some of these Activities

Kite Making - Build a kite and fly it on the first day of the New Year. Ancient Māori kite-flying traditions have a highly symbolic connection to Matariki - the two were historically inseparable. Kites were seen as connectors between the heavens and earth.

Art - Create a piece of artwork celebrating Matariki

Gardening - Use Matariki as a time to clear the winter vegetables, and prepare your vegetable garden for the new planting. It could become a family tradition to do the gardening altogether – at least for one day of the year.

Kai - Prepare a Matariki feast for family and friends - it's a Matariki tradition. Make it a meal to farewell the old year and see in the new one.

A new beginning - Start something new today. Use this day to set new goals for the New Year.

Samoan Language Week

On Wednesday in Akomanga Wha we celebrated Samoan Language week.
In the morning we had a mhi whakatau and welcomed Nayland Kindy to our room.
Then we taught a the Nayland kindy children a sasa and a new waiata call 'Savlivali'. It was so fun!
Then Miss Mason read a story from Samoa how the crab got his hard shell. Kirsten came and told us a Matariki story with puppets which was tu meke!
After morning tea some of our VIP's made lollie lei's and we did activities learning about the language and culture of Samoan. Kayla was also busy making a corned beef and cabbage dish.
Margie and Tala made us an amazing Samoan lunch which was enjoyed by all. Talofa!

Today we celebrated the end of our kiwiana unit and went down to Tahunanui for a walk on the beach, a play in the playground, lunch in the sun and then to see a real life kiwi icon, the tuatara. Akomanga Wha - laying of the Mauri Stones for the new dental clinic

The Mauri stones were laid at the end of Term 3 ready to bless the foundations of the new community dental clinic that is going to be built at Nayland Primary School. Hannah and Kayla helped to turn the turf and Manu and Puna laid the stones. Members of Akomanga Wha and the maori Culture Group came to school early and helped Uncle Tahi to sing a waiata. Tu meke!!

Raising Money for the Red Cross

On the last week of school Tunisia and Hannah M wrote a letter to Mrs Gulbransen asking if they could have a mufti day at school. The money was to raise awareness about the people of Christchurch who had just experienced the terrible earthquake recently. The girls raised over $400.00 towards the Red Cross funds. Well done girls for thinking of others and for running the coin trail at school.

Home School Partnership

Home School Partnership Evening - Celebrating our achievements and E Learning.
What a wonderful and busy day. After school we had a Maori Culture practice from 3 - 5 and then we shared our Red Square performance.
After that some tamariki stayed on for the Home School Partnership evening. While the children had tea cooked by Mr Power some children were involved in sharing their achievements with the Maori Community.

Lauren gave an amazing performance of her speech.
Manu and Frano shared what they had been doing with Nayland kindy.
Zac shared some information about Knowledge NET.
Meihana and Bailey shared some of the things that have been learning in Room 2. They showed parents how they have been learning about Green Screen and how it linked into their topic work.

'What are these little black balls?' said Mum in a loud voice.

She was standing there holding a pair of my jeans in one hand and the little black balls in the other. I wasn't sure what to say. She wasn't going to like it. Mum usually checks the pockets before she puts my jeans in the wash. I should have emptied them. But I forgot. Now the jeans were all stained. "Well......' I began.

'Come on, Sally' said Mum. She thrust the little black balls under my nose. 'Out with it'.

I just looked at my toes for a bit. Then I took a deep breath. It was no good stalling. 'goat poo,' I said.

'Goat poo,' shrieked Mum. She threw the droppings on the floor and scrubbed at her hands with a towel. Then she turned on me with flaming eyes. I could tell that she was just about to do something silly. Like ground me for a month. Or stop my pocket money.

'I can explain,' I said. 'You won't be mad when I tell you what happened. Just give me a chance.' I took another deep breath and launched into my explanation.

Matariki Celebrations - Hangi

Hangi meals are $5.00 or you can get a whanau pack for $18.00.

Hangi meals include:

Steps to preapare a hangi pit

Steps to be Taken Before Lighting the Hangi - Nga mahi i mua i te tahunga o te hangi

STEP 1 Place dry paper and kindling in the bottom of the hangi pit.

STEP 2 Place three layers of manuka logs on top of the dry paper and kindling.

STEP 3 Select enough stones or iron bars to completely cover the base of the hangi pit and place carefully on top of the manuka logs.

STEP 4 Firing of the hangi pit.

STEP 5 Final stages of burning manuka logs.

STEP 6 Remove red hot embers and ash from hangi pit (this reduces the excessive smoky taste in the food).

STEP 7 Place hot embers and ash on a corrugated iron sheet and remove from the hangi pit to a safe place. Hose the embers and ash to cool.

NB Supervise the fire at all times.

Placing of Hangi Baskets in Hangi Pit -Te whakanoho o nga rourou kopaki ki roto i te pokorua mo te hangi

STEP 8 Carefully place the hangi baskets on top of the hot stones, stacking no more than two baskets high and ensuring that the baskets containing meat are on the bottom layer.

STEP 9 Place the wet cloth sheet(s) over the hangi baskets.

STEP 10 Place the clean wet sacks over the wet sheet.

NB Wet sheets and numerous sacks create the steam required to cook the food. More water can be used if necessary. However, it should be applied sparingly as too much water can cool the stones too quickly, which can result in undercooked food.

STEP 11 Place a tarpaulin cover over the entire hangi pit and place soil around the edges of the tarpaulin to seal in the steam.

NB Once the hangi pit has been sealed it must be supervised throughout the cooking time (2.5-3 hours). This safety measure is to make sure that no steam escapes from the pit (escaping steam = escaping heat).

If steam leakage occurs, seal with soil immediately.

Removing Hangi Baskets after Cooking - Te tango o nga rourou kopaki mai i te pokorua hangi

STEP 12 After 2.5-3 hours, carefully remove the soil from the edges of the tarpaulin.

Carefully roll the tarpaulin away from the hangi pit.

STEP 13 Carefully remove the sacks one by one from the hangi pit.

STEP 14 Carefully remove the large white cloth sheet.

NB When removing the tarpaulin, sacks and sheets ensure that soil does not fall into baskets.

STEP 15 Remove the hangi baskets from the hangi pit and take them to the kitchen. Kai time!
